I am a first time member referred by a friend who has found this site extrememly helpful. My 740 GL wagon's (Regina model)in-tank fuel pump was replaced in March 2003 by my mechanic. It began buzzing several weeks ago and I decided to try replacing it myself. Seemed quite early for a pump failure.

I did not empty & lower the tank, but took out the fuel pump apparatus through the access plate. The filter at the base of the pump had a 3/8 inch tear in it; I presume this could be the reason for the pump failure.

I succeeded in removing everything and replacing the new pump. The problem (if there is one) occurred when I tried to put it all back in the tank. No matter how many different angles or ways I maneuvered the pump apparatus, I could not get it to seat in the tank opening without having to force it in the last inch or so. The pump sits in a plastic carrier of sorts which slides up and down 1-2 inches--is this related to the the fuel guage indicator and /or would this explain the resistance I felt when putting the pump appartus back in?

Should the pump appartus go back in without the end touching the bottom of the whitish plastic "liner tray" (my words) in the bottom of the tank or should I expect it to touch the bottom and then have to force it in the last inch? Any suggestions on getting this back in properly would be greatly appreciated.

For what it's worth, I performed the same task on the same year/model last month. I had the same experience, that the last inch or so was tought: it required a fair amount of resistence to get the thing pressed down and aligned properly to get the plastic retaining nut to thread properly. As is so often the case, I needed that elusive third hand. It was also pretty tough on my hands. If I recall correctly, I used a peice of scrap wood to push down on the lower portion of the mechanism to get it seated in place, and then was able to get the ring nut started. Although using that much pressure seemed a bit worriesome, it ended up working out just fine.
