Proper procedure for adjusting late 240 parking brake? 200 1992

Hello all:

I need to adjust the parking brake on my '92 245, but I am finding it to be a bit of a puzzle. A while back I replaced the rear rotors and I had to loosen the cables to get the rotor off. Since then, despite several attempts to adjust the parking brake it hasn't functioned ideally.

There is a confusing arrangement for adjusting the brake, including the big 17mm nut in the center console behind the ashtray, as well as two 10mm nuts at the front near the lever. The 17mm nut never seems to really get tight.

Can anyone explain exactly how a proper adjustment is made so that the parking brake will engage correctly? This is for the late 240, which does not appear to have star adjusters in at the emergency brake shoes, BTW...

Hello Herb; According to my Volvo manual, and confirmed when I did the rear brakes on the 240 a couple of weeks ago, the 17mm nut in the console is the only adjustment for the parking brake for the models without the star adjuster.
IF that does not do it, 5 to 8 clicks for firm engagement, then there could be a problem with the shoes/hardware or stretched cables. I found a busted spring in the left side on mine that was causing problems and noise.

Sumerduckman is right on the money. About a month ago I inadvertently left my parking brake on for about 30 miles of h-way driving. Brake didn't work after that. Actually, it barely worked. It seemed like it took a week, but eventually the 17mm nut finally tightened and luckily for me the e-brake seems fine.

I have star adjusters on mine. But with the rear on stands I'd try to adjust the 10mm nuts so that both wheels offer about the same resistance to turning. Then tighten the 17mm so that the wheels lock at about the third or fourth click of hand brake.
