Door Locks, Mind of Their Own 200 1988

Hi Bricksters:

Could someone help me troubleshoot the problem with my electric door locks on my 87 240GL. Interestingly, it seems that summer (hot and muggy here in NC) that they do not work consistently. Often they do not lock at all, sometimes work, or do a half way job. Periodically, they have locked all on their own (except driver's door.) I believe I am hearing the "clicks" from behind the console. Could it be the driver's actuator, or is it likely to be the relays or something else? Can anyone offer some easy ideas? Don't mind trying to replace a part or two, but would like to get them off Ebay if possible and w/o spending big bucks for a mechanic to do it.

Thank you,

AndrewinNC

    Andrew,

I’ve had this happen on several 240’s. It’s always the wire insulation at the switch in the driver’s door. (The one attached to the key tumbler) Remove interior door panel, locate switch unclip from lock mechanism. Separate the wires and reinsulated them with some “liquid tape” or silicone sealant then re-install. You should be able to fix without buying new parts.

    Good luck.

Start with the relays. They can be accessed by removing the center AC/Heater vents. You might even be able to get at them by popping that center speaker grill off (since there isn't actually a speaker there).

You can probably pop the relays open and just resolder them.

After that I'd check the driver door switch. That is a classic place where the system fails.

    Good luck!

High probability its the switch in the door. The insulation around the wiring inside will deteriorate and cause intermittent shorts. Just take off door panel as suggested above and alleviate any bare wiring as suggested previously.
