brakes occasionally 'freeze' 200 1990

This has happened twice: I press on my brakes and my car doesn't stop, it just kind of slows a little...it feels like my brakes are freezing or something: I press nearly to the floor and my car just slows down a little, like it rolls or something. I think I definitely need to (at least) get the brake pads fixed: I occasionally have to press the pedal down further than I used to have to.

Any ideas of what might be wrong?

Thanks.

p.s. I'm taking my car in to the shop next week and am trying to figure out how big this problem is.

Does the pedal go almost to the floor before the brakes work? Do they work better if you pump them? If so, then you have a bad master cylinder. Get it fixed right away. Not terribly expensive, but if it is the MC it could become dangerous - your brakes could go TOTALLY out! Not something to mess with...

Thanks! Yes -- That's exactly what happens: Brakes go almost to the floor, and they work better if I pump them. I'm not going to drive it until I get them fixed, and I'm going to have it towed to my Volvo specialists on Monday morning. After gliding through a stop sign a couple hours ago (the last time I drove it), I'm afraid to drive it again.

      Thanks again.

No problem, same thing happened to my "90" about 3 years ago. MC's don't last forever.

There is another less likely possibilty. You might want to check the fluid level in the MC. If low, look for a leak on the ground in the general the area below the MC. If you find fluid it could be a bad brake line junction box (located well below the MC). Not super expensive either, but perhaps more dangerous as it might be more prone to cause a total brake failure than a MC.

        Been down that road too...

          OK -- thanks again. [By the way...my car is also a 90 240DL...with 233K]
