Introduction and Thermostat Question 700 1987

Hello all. This is board is such an amazing resource.

I've recently acquired an '87 740 w/ 90k miles. It seems that the original radiator is still in place. I'm thinking that a replacement is probably my top priority as far as preventive maintenance. While it's being done I'll probably have the hoses, heater valve and thermostat replaced as well. I've noticed that thermostats have different degree ratings 82, 87, 90 etc.. which is recommended?

The other concerns on my list are motor mounts (already diagnosed as problematic by the recent repair records of previous owner) and I guess, eventually....the wiring harness.

I'm also working on some small DYI jobs like the windshield washer T-Valve (done today,) trunk struts, and antenna mast replacement.

On the bright side, the car has already had some extensive work done to it over the past year by the previous owner - catalytic converter, fluids, new battery, fuel and supression relays, distributor cap and rotor, plugs and wires, mass air flow sensor, strut rod bushings, a tie rod, flame shield, ISC valve.

I'm still awaiting some missing service records and I'm concerned as to whether or not the timing belt has been changed yet. If it hasn't that my go on the list after motor mounts.

If anyone has any suggestion as to prioritize these service items or point out anything that I may have missed please let me know.

Thanks in advance,
Marc

are you saying that because the radiator is original that you feel the need to replace it? or are u suggesting that because the radiator is original that you must replace the thermostat?
Radiator replacement is not routine maintainence in any world i live in. Mine has 330k on it and is fine....if you feel so inclined a flush kit might be an alternative to a ridiculous and unwarranted repair.
if you wanna replace the thermostat for the hell of it, that might not be so reidiculous as it is a small quick and inexpesnsive job....personally i don't advocate replacing parts that aren't broken...with rear exceptions such as timing belts...

    Thermostat Question 700 1987

you should take a look in the FAQ at

    http://brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/Cooling.htm#Thermostat_Replacements

I believe that will tell you to use the 92C thermostat. That's what I'm using. I believe in very hot climates it's common to use one with a lower opening temp though.

The FAQ will keep you busy learning for a long time.

    Enjoy your new ride.

Which Thermostat? While you've got a choice, the Volvo specifications are:

    B 200/204/230F/FD 198º F (92º C)
    B 230FTurbo/234 189º F (87º C)

As far as the T-Belt, without records, I'd do it sooner rather than later. If it's a '87 with 90K miles, assume it's averaged aproximately 6K/year miles. That means that if the t-belt was changed at 50k, it might have been nearly 7 years ago that it's been replaced. You should also get a new tensioner, and be ready to do seals too. Having a water pump on hand would not be a bad idea either.

Moter mounts are important too. Take a look at your trans mount too.

Non of these jobs are overly difficult if you take your time and have the t-belt tool.

    Good Luck,

    Tom
