Stripped Threads 900 1994

I changed my oil last week and noticed the plug was in there super tight. I really had to put some force behind my wrench to get it off. I didn't have a new crush gasket to put on so I changed the oil and filter and just put it back on with the old gasket and lived with the drips. I noticed that it wouldn't go on very tight but I just thought maybe that was because of the used gasket on there. I picked up some new gaskets and drained it again last night to put the new gasket on hoping to alleviate the drips and when I was wiping off the oil around the hole I saw what at first glance appeared to be a spring or coil of some type hanging out of the drain hole. Upon closer inspection it dawned on me that the "coil" was actually stripped threads. Crap. Since I didn't want little ribbons of metal floating around in my oil pan I pulled the "coil" out and put the plug back in with the new gasket. I really didn't want to put too much force on it and risk stripping it further and don't think I crushed the gasket at all and it's leaking pretty good (like a drop every 10 minutes or so). The bolt is in there well enough to not fall out I think. It's on tight enough that I couldn't undo it with my fingers. This worries me. Am I screwed? I called an indy volvo garage and they said they've never heard of that happening on an older Volvo. Any thoughts?

J

PS-It wasn't me that changed the oil last time (when it was on super tight).

tv pierce is right, don't mess with the self tappers. Go to Napa and get a drain plug and a tap, there is plenty of metal to make a bigger hole and thread it. I have seen that type of problem where the drain plug does come out and all the oil with it, engines need oil. Enough said. Pauli

For a short-term fix, wrap a band of aluminum foil around the bolt (in the opposite direction as the threads) and tighten the bolt to "good and snug" (that's a technical value that's achieve by tightening until just before you think the threads are gonna give way).

Then when you're ready to fix it right, get an oversized bolt -- not a self tapping one. Self tapping bolts are essentially screws. They're made to "self tap" once -- not a good idea for this application. After you've changed your oil a few times, the "threads" will be gone, and then you'll just have new stripped threads in a bigger hole.

I would not run around with my oil plug in finger tight. The fact that you had a piece of the thread come off does not necessarily mean that it is stripped.

I would put a wrench on it and tighten it up to where you normally would. If it won't tighten then you know it is stripped. If it does you are good to go.

Good reason to change your own oil from now on.

it seems that i've seen self tapping over sized drain bolts before.i dont remember where, but i'd start somewhere like napa.
it sure beats oil pan replacement.take your drain plug with you if you find one available so it can be sized up.

Yeah I looked in the FAQ and the only suggestion I found was it recommends replacing the oil pan if the threads are stripped. There's got to be something else? Isn't that like throwing out the baby with the bathwater? I'm thinking rethreading it maybe? Ayone?

seen something about a drain bolt that u leave in to drain (has some sort of drain cock on it) if you search posts etc its in there somewhere...

thinking you might be able to apply one with suitable liquid gasket etc (weld?) to be sure it cant come out..this will give you time to source a good replacement sump from a scrap yard?

Get an oversized bolt at NAPA and retap the pan. You will have to flush out the metal particles with solvent and a magnet before replacing the oil.

I seem to recall some kind of thread repair product from Permatex, but I would not trust that in an oil bolt application where the price of failure is the engine.
