Dead?? 200 1991

I put in a new battery about 10 mins. ago. The old one was as dead as a door nail and wouldnt take a charge. So i stick the new battery in and go to start her up and it cranks about 3 times and a small amount of smoke popped up from the engine bay. Im not sure if it was the engine or something electrical. But the engine stopped cranking.

I can turn the raido on and when i turn it off and take the key out then put it back in it dosent ask for the code. so i know the battery has enough juice.

What could it be? I'm thinking either starter or alternator.

I did suspect my alternator a while back when i couldnt start the car but i think that was the battery and not the alternator.

any suggestions?

Have you checked your terminals. Given the smoke signal, maybe your terminals are dirty and it has ceased to connect. If the car is completely dead, I would first suspect a loose or dirty battery terminal. The next suspect would be the starter solenoid---often a culprit in these situations.
