Rear Speakers in 240 Wagon 200 1989

Hello All,

Took my 240 wagon to one of the better Car Audio places in my fair city of Winnipeg asking to get some 3 1/2" speakers installed in the panels just above the back seat. They came back and told me it was a no-go.
Are the holes really there? I've yet to try and take the plastic panel off but I was told that there are holes there.

Right now I've got the two stock speakers in the front and a Bazooka tube in the back, sounds fine up front, but the kids keep wanting us to turn up their music all the time. They can't hear the ones in the front that well until we turn them up.

Has anybody else had these installed in those panels? Any other suggestions?

Thanks

I know I might get some flak from fellow BB'ers for this one, but I have two words for you, Four Sons... Speaker Boxes. I stuck a couple 6x9 into boxes with enough slack on the wires to move them wherever I need to. Just be sure to install a couple brackets on the boxes to screw them into the lining so they don't roll around (or worse if you should ever get into an accident) and they really don't take up all that much space.

No, the space is all taken up by the two 12" subs on their box

      Speaker boxes ... 200 1989

Hey, they work, so no qualms from me on 'em.

The stock location is on the plastic panel on the side, except on the older ones, they were mounted on a vinyl covered hardboard. The sound ain't great there, and you're really limited to 4" with wimpy magnets because of clearance. And don't be suprised if the first time you fold down the seat, you completely destroy the grill. Ask me how I know ... :)

The later ones did have the speakers on the bottom of the rear door, where they might just get kicked in due time.

My vote goes to speaker boxes too ... you have the space, plus its easy.

Stock speakers will fit in the plastic panels above the rear seat. There isn't alot of room, especialy when flipping the seat back forward. Unless you are an audiofile, get a set of stock front speakers and grills at the junkyard. The plastic piece has four raised bosses where you drill the holes which helps locate the speaker. I had to take one carefully place hammer swing at the sheetmetal to clear the magnet.

I put 1" tweeters in the little panels behind the backseat
speakers in front doors and rear
    center channel in dash
    mid-ranges in trunk door
    12" sub in back

there are a lot of places to put speakers in the 245, maybe not factory spot- but there is room behind most panels if you get the right speaker

The holes should be there for 4" speakers, but a lot of aftermarket grilles won't clear the seat when you fold it. Another alternative would be to install speakers in the back doors. Late 240 wagons (91-93) came with 4" speakers in the back doors from the factory. My 87 had a pair of 5.25" in it when I bought it.
