760 B280F 'knocking' 700 1989

Hi again,

Another annoying thing with the car is an unven knocking sound that occurs when warm and idling in drive. It sounds a bit loke someone knocking on a desk. It is loud enough to be annoying. I have checked the exhaust shields and all seem ok. it appears to be coming from somewhere around the left rear of the engine. The sound does not happen when idling in park, or while driving. I have tried using a hose to listen, but cannot isolate the sound exactly. What could this possibly be?

Thanks again,

Tim, Australia.

I'm not sure but I have a knocking sound in my 760/B280F. It occurs in drive at idle. I am pretty sure mine comes from the vacuum pump. That would be in the right front of the engine though. It goes away eventually.

Thanks for the reply. I'm fairly certain it isn't what you describe, as I don't think this engine has a vacuum pump, although the symptoms sound the same. I'll have to look and listen closer. It appears the B28 has a vacuum pump in the location I'm describing, but my version of the B280F does not. When I first heard the sound it appeared to be coming from around the bellhousing, so at the moment it's a mystery.

      Thanks again, Tim
