OD Guru...Need help!! M46 with O/D leaking at cross threaded stud. 200 1983

Finally installed M46 tranny with redone OD (bought seals etc from ODGURU....great service and prices). One of the rear lower studs (the one that serves as the ground for the solenoid) was loose (the jiggle test proved it). When I used the old 2-nut method (NOT what you might think!!)to tighten it back into the housing,it gave slightly at the end of tightening. Being aware, I stopped torquing and removed the stud, added some blue LockTite and re-installed it. Tightened it up only a little tight.
Tomorrow I will know if the fix worked (by the size of the leak)
OD Guru, what can be done if the threads on the aluminum housing are toast? Should I use some RED loctite and really glue that stud in there?
Gracias,
el Raidman

Stripped threads in aluminium. Not the best place either.

If you have pulled the threads off the case, I do not think your Locktight will hold up for long since the expansion of aluminium vs steel during heat/cool may fracture the bond. I could be wrong but since it is in a location where all the oil could be gone and the damage done before it is noticed, why take the chance?

Working from memory at 5:45 AM. Stud boss on case at that point is external to the gasket. Using a correct drill size for 1/4-28 threads ( this is either a letter or number drill bit not fractional), drill through the boss and retap 1/4-28.

Get a 1/4-28 bolt with full length threads of sufficient length so a "stud" sticks out the rear of the case that will accept the nut. Locktight this into position using a washer under the head since the thread "ridge" at the head will not allow full case contact.

      Dear ODG:
I have a speare M46 Overdrive unit(which I rebuilt with parts from you), BUT it does not have the cable driven speedo.
It has a plug. I also have a spare gear for the speedo that could be fitted. What else do I need..I figure a seal of some type. I also have the screw on holder for the cable.
How do I convert the 86 OD to retrofit the 83?
I figure that the best would be to replace the unit (while on the car as long as it is up on the lift). Any things to watch out for?
      thanks,
      el Raidman

Sorry for the delay in replying. Been busy and out of the area for a little bit.

Since the rear case has not been drilled for the gear carrier, I do not think it is prudent to drill the rear case for the speedo gear.

Without the proper jig to hold the case, the probability of miss-alignment of the speedo driven and drive gears is very high. It may work for a while but the driven gear will eventually get chewed up.

You could just change the rear housing on the 86 unit, using the case and drive gear from the 83. Internally the units only changed within the hydraulic control system and the planetary gear support bearings. You pull the rear off the 86, leaving the planetary with it, do the same to the 83 and swap just the rear case and output bell as a unit.

If you want, I do have a couple of front cases that are from destroyed sliding members or damaged planetary system. New they run $190. I'll let one go for $50 and shipping. That would allow you to have a spare if you use the rear of the 83 and the front of the 86 just to get you back on the road.

Let's take this off list since future content will probably not benefit the rest of the group.
