760 wiring diagram..what have I gotten myself into! 700 1990

So I got the wiring diagram for my 1990 760 Turbo in the mail today. What any amazing tool! Next thought...holy #%&@ this is complex!

I have worked on many cars and bikes in my time, but now I realize why it was that I wanted a (relatively) simple 240 with the more modern AC and biodegradeable wiring harnes (aka '88 and newer). I do most of my own work and have diagnosed many an electrical issue using a good wiring diagram, but this car is truly over the top!

My favorite had to be the fact that the criuse control takes information or power from four different fuses!

My beloved '78 245 turd wagon Bessy-the-Brown-Cow (traded for $500 in house painting) is now more sorely missed than ever. She may have leaked a quart every 500 miles out the main seal, but nothing every broke on her that I could not fix on the side of the road enough to get me home. Why did I ever let her go!

try 1 for an s80. 740s look like bicycles compared to them. fyi, volvo and toyota have the best diagrams. very easy to follow, with each system on a page. good luck, chuck.

I know the schematic is great and I know I can figure it out...just got that minor panic attack that comes when you wonder "Why didn't I just...like I said I would."

Any electrical system is easy if you know how to read a schematic. Particularly genuine Volvo diagrams.

What are you needing a diagram for?

      Three things are bothering me:

The ever-present stereo question...I have finally given up and am ordering an aftermarket receiver. All I ever wanted was a cd-player that was not RF modulated. Love the stock sound, but got to have a CD. Amp and rear-door speakers will have to wait (all aftermarket receivers are 4-channel). Anyone ever splice the stock amp cable (6-pin) to RCA outputs?

I have an intermitent fuel guage that I am tracking down, but may be linked to a questionable PO gauge-cluster repair. Heck, someone put the hour-hand of the clock on 180 degrees out of phase and glued the cluster to the bezel assembly!

I bought this car for the duration (how many people have said that) and I want to be able to fix anything that comes up down the road. Other posts strongly encouraged me to get a Volvo wiring diagram...obviously good advice.

I installed an aftermarket and spliced two speakers into the rear channels. now i got six speakers. and most aftermarket decks have 1) a built in amp that is most likely more powerfull than stock 2) RCA preouts to add an amp on 3) cleaner signal. you could splice into the factory din plugs, but for just over a hundred bucks and maybe an hours worth of work you could have a much nicer sounding aftermarket. heck, even the factory speakers sound better with a new reciever!
        good luck!

oh, btw, i agree, the wiring diagram rocks! (in fact, any and all the green manuals are your best tool)

By splicing two sets of speakers in parrallel, you create a dangerously low impedance (2 Ohm)...you will likely toast your amp section over time. If you set them up in series, you have created the opposite, a very high impedance and great loss of volume or power (depeninding on how you look at it).

I have every intention of adding a small amp for the rear channel, but no one seems to make "small" amps anymore (25x 25 RMS...doesn't exist).

First off, just take out the cluster and inspect the back. If anything's loose, tighten it up. If you're worried that the whole cluster may be toast, grab one from a junk yard. Check out www.car-part.com for full service yards that may have an appropriate cluster.

As for the stereo, you may be better off running your own wiring. Most modern radios can put out more power than the Volvo amp.

I have a friend with a 91 744T I just put a CD player in.....he got it at either Circuit City or Best Buy....anyways, there is an actual "amplifier adapter" ($15) to use factory Volvo amps....the instructions were incredibly thorough and easy to read. Worked like a charm!

I would kill for such a thing if it actaully uses the stock amp. Our Curcuit City has never heard of such a thing.

hmmm... never heard of that amp adapter to use the amp also, but i got an adapter to plug into the amp factory plug to make wiring a whole lot easier.
