My mother-in-law used to have one; a 1985. It was fun to drive on the ultra-twisty roads on the North Norway coast, with its rear-mounted gearbox it had a perfect weight distribution. By that time Volvo had sorted out a lot of the initial problems, which were many.

An important reason why Volvo bought the Dutch DAF company was that they needed to offer a smaller model than the 240, and DAF had this one ready for production. The first few years it came in the DAF configuration, with a variable automatic transmission. Horrible thing. Over the years the car became quite a bit better, some of the later models even got a genuine Volvo (B200) engine. But I always thought it looked like it got ridiculously small wheels. And I never got over the fact that they put a French engine into a Dutch car and called it a Volvo.

Erling.

No worse than the old S40 (Mitsibishi-based) or the new S40 (F*rd
Focus platform), really. Volvo has always shared a design with
someone for their smaller cars.

IIRC, both the 300s and the 66s (check gallery under "Others") were originally what we call "captive imports", DAF (Dutch) cars dressed up and marketed as Volvos.

Bret's right though, neither one looks particularly solid to me. The 66 looks like a cross between a 140 and a Datsun B210.

Those Europeans get all of the fun stuff. All we get is the high end ($$) version of their cars. Too bad the Feds are so tight with the regulations. Went to Paris last year, should have seen all of the "A" cars - from every manufacturer. A 245 looked huge in the sea of cars.

Until seeing those pictures, I knew that it was some sort of Volvo in the commerical, but I didn't know if it was a 300- or 400-series. Now I know it is the former.

Anyway, the commercial is for a English-language school or course, marketed towards (maybe) Dutch people. A foreign family of four gets into their car, straps themselves in, and turns on the radio. They start bopping their heads to the catchy tune that begins playing. However, the words to the song are very explicit--"I wanna f*** in the a**!" repeated over and over! The camera switches to a rear view, and for a split-second, as the car drives away, the upper-left ubiquitous "Volvo" logo can be seen on the car as it drives away. "Wanna learn English?" appears on-screen, as it is an advertisement for Soesmann Language Training.

The movie was recorded and uploaded to various places on the Internet, and now it's reached the status of one of those "e-mail videos" that gets sent to everyone for a good laugh.

Description of commercial begins with "European family."

I was *quite* proud of myself for recognizing the build of the car as perhaps Volvo, and the actually spotting the logo.
