940 wont start update part III 900 1994

Hi guys,

I hope all is well. My 94 940 turbo is frustrating the crap out of me. If you guys rememeber about a month-month and a half ago my 940 was suffering from a no start condition. With your guys help and the FAQs I went ahead and changed the rpm sensor, fuel pump relay, radio suppression relay. The problem went away for a couple of weeks when my 940 wouldn't start and stranded me at work. I towed it home and replaced the coil, power stage, plugs, and plug wires. Again the 940 seemed fine for about a week, I didn't drive it much.

Coming home yesterday crusing about 65mph my car lost power and stalled. I tried giving her gas but she stalled any way. At the side of the road I cranked the starter on and off for about 5 minutes when the car started (with me flooring the gas pedal) Got home safly but the car wouldn't start again last night, but did start this morning.

Last night I completed OBD1 diagnostic found in the FAQs with no trouble codes pulled and all components testing fine. Any ideas before I tow the car to the mechanic? Thanks for the help guys.

Michael

Hi Micheal.from your post you said (you floored the gas pedal to start),this might be an indication that the car was flooded.did you check the fuel pressure regulator?.also when it doesnt start try to pull out the plug to the air mass meter and see if it starts.i hope this helps, keep us posted.good luck.charles.

One quick question, an obvious one perhaps but it sounds like you've checked everything else..do you have bad fuel, water in the gas, something someone may have put in the tank, an object that gets drawn into the fuel pump opening only to be desloged after awhile?

From what I have heard on this site Volvos have lots of grounds and they need to be cleaned and repositioned from time to time.

Don't give up, it's a machine and there is a reason. Check the basics again.

    Good luck!

Check the engine grounds. Not sure which ones are on your car, but you will want to unscrew the connections at both ends, clean them up, and rescrew. Those tend to corrode and provide poor contact.

Also try keeping the fuel level very high, see if the problem occures less. Maybe your in-tank pump is not operating any more and all suction is relide upon the main fuel pump. Is the main pump having a loud buzz when the car is idling? This is a sign of a weak or a stressed fuel pump.

    Good luck,

    Greg

Couple of years ago my brother had weird electrical/starting problems with his 760. Turned out to be a bad engine grounding strap.

    Hope this helps you.

What is your fuel level at? Did plugs and wires, why no cap and rotor? How many miles?

      Hello,

thanks for the reply, The fuel level is a little above 1/2. The cap and rotor were less than 1yr old, but I put in new ones just in case. I have 97 thousand miles on the ODO

See if a 5 gallon gas can, and one or two trips to the gas station resolve the problem for now. If so, keep it at 3/4 a tank or above for the next couple of weeks. If there is no more problem, you most likely have a pre-pump failing.

I hate to state the obvious, but have you changed the fuel filter and checked wiring on the fuel pump itself? Clogged fuel filters can be clogged only when fuel flow is happenning and then the sediment "falls" off the filter material when there is no flow. Rare, but possible.

Couple of other guys mentioned the intake hose (airbox to turbo) can also collapse and spring back into position when not under boost when I had a similar problem. When was the last time you changed it?

I am still learning on these more complex cars myself, but the simplest stuff has almost always been the problem so far (loose groung screw, bad vac lines, etc.).

      Hello,

Thanks for the reply. To answer your question, I replaced the fuel filter about a year ago. I'm going to check the wiring on the fuel pumps today afterwork, I'll also check the intake hose as well. Thanks for the advice.
