Liquid Petrol Gas Pics for Joaquin Novara 120-130

For Joaquin Novara and interested people...

A bit late though, but still, here’s some pic’s of my LPG setup.

-the LPG tank. (36 ltr’s) (you can fill those up to about 80% for safety reasons) (some people think it would be dangerous driving with this pressure tank, but I’m quite sure there are 0 (zero!) recordings of problems with the tank in accident/crashes) (I personally think it’s even safer then a petrol tank…)

-the shut off valve in the petrol line (behind fuel pump)

-a vaporiser with wiring (fuel switch and relay)

-a SU carb with LPG-venturi-bit in place (this is from a double SU setup, see the Y-bit in the gas line)(I think the venture bits of a double carb. setup are a bit smaller in diameter because of less flow, but I’m not sure)

-a venture bit that fits in between air cleaner and carb. (Stromberg in this case)

-wire running from coil/distributor towards the relay (so the LPG or/ Petrol valve can only open when car is actually running)

-filler opening for the LPG (Pressure fitting)

-overview of the vaporiser and setup on my daily car (little thick circle is adjustment screw for stationary running, thin large circle is the ‘main jet’ (just flow restriction valve) and notice the T-bits on the cooling lines running to vaporiser to keep it from freezing (red))

-an other view of the setup (blue circles adjustment screws again, green line is LPG from tank, yellow circle is the valve for the LPG, red line is short LPG line between valve and vaporiser, grey line is the gas line running to the carb.

*the red line should be a short a possible. After engine shut down there is still pressure in that line. Because of that the gas is still liquid. Once vaporised it’s an amount that can give quite a ‘bang’. If your car is parked inside your garage and the vaporiser leeks a bit (often does) the amount LPG sitting in the red line can give you that ‘bang’ when you start the car…

Hopefully this will be helpful to you. If you want some more specific photo’s or info let me know.

Cheers and good luck,
Ben

that's really interesting...what sort of performance does that deliver? how many miles between "fill ups"?

Performance is the same or a bit less as using regular petrol. LPG has a bit less energy per volume then petrol, but because it's mixed with the air as a gas (instead of petrol droplets that have to evaporate first etc.) the mixture is very good and thereby efficient.

On LPG I do 1:10 (1 liter petrol every 100 km). On petrol I should do the same but I only get about 1:8 which is due to a faulty main jet: when driving on LPG the needle of the main jet does not get any lubrication by the pertol so every time I move the throttle it wears out a bit, so by now the main jet is simply too big. (which is the only problem driving on LPG, next to needing hardenend valve seats)

      Cheers, Ben

I don't understand why any wear occurs to the needle at all as it is not supposed to be touching anything? Is your carby the biased needle type? or did you mean the carby piston wears in the cylinder?

        Mike!

Both the SU and the Stromberg carbs have a needle wich is attached to the carb piston, and slides up and down with it. Indeed it is not *supposes* to tough anything, but in practice it does. It slides up and down and vibrates a bit. Normaly the pertol passing in between the needle and it's housing (or jet, or dunno what the word is) is lubricating the needle. Since there is no pertol it wears out, leaving a larger hole/jet and a thinner needle leaving me with an engine that runs too rich.
Here in the netherlands there are a lot of classic cars driving on LPG and all have this problem. Not really worrysome cause when you have a LPG-kit you will also use it and won't be driving on pertol anyway.

          Cheers Ben

OK, still doesn't make "sense" to me but that's the difference between theory and reality. Ja, very familiar with SU's and their proclivities but the LPG twist is new to me.

            Thanks,

            Mike!

        > ... when driving on LPG the needle of the main jet
        > does not get any lubrication by the pertol so
        > every time I move the throttle it wears out a bit, ...

A few years ago I went to get info on LPG in a single-Stromberg (1969) Amazon, and the installer I talked with (and old-timer himself!) mentioned adding a vacuum nipple to the dome of the carburettor and a vacuum line with an electrical switch that would be actuated only when running on LPG.

The result is that when running on LPG, the piston is always "sucked up" into the top position -> no needle or jet wear. He said this was often omitted on cheap LPG installations, but should be part of the package.

(I don't know about SUs, but Stromberg needles and jets are expensive too! I'd go to some lengths to protect them from wearing "needlessly" in my recently renovated carburettor.)

Offcourse! Why didn't I think of that?
I did stick the 'pistion' onto the top position a few times, but that meant not being able to run on petrol (or only at full throttle...) But this is the solution, thanks heaps!

          Cheers, Ben

Please, see details about the installation of the vaccum gadget on the carb in: http://www.chrisperfect.com/lpg_fitting_b_2.html
