Kickdown cable causing shifting problems? 200

Yesterday we noticed our Brick (1989, 245,auto,202,000)shifting odd. It reved higher than usual before shifting and "clunked" when going into drive.

I noticed that the kickdown cable was loose and not retracting, sticky and like no spring action. Also noticed a bit of rust on the part of the cable that is usually retracted.

Would a faulty kickdown cable cause the symptoms we're experiencing?

If the kickdown cable is could be causing the problems, what is a fair price to have it replaced?

The tranny fluid is full and fairly fresh.

Thank you,
Garge

Yes, when the kickdown cable sticks it won't change gears, hence the high revs.

If its terribly rusty you'll need to replace it. If its just sticky, lubricate it. When mine stuck I removed the rubber cap, pulled the cable out as far as I could, greased it up and let it go. I haven't had the problem since.

A hit of Wd40 down the inside of the cable probably would help as well.

Thanks for the ideas. After lubing, the cable still won't retract all the way. Any suggestions?

Thank You
