Steering problem fixed - strut boot question 200 1987

I just greased the steering column u-joints. You guys were 100% right. It steers smoothly now. I did notice the pass. side strut boot is shredded/rotted. I've got an extra set from the last strut replacement on my other 245. My question is can I just jack up the front to "unload" the spring and unbolt the top nut. Slide down the strut and slip on a new boot? I really do not want to deal with renting a spring compressor. I'll just rip out the old boot (it's already half torn anyway). The new boot could just be stuck in between the spring coils and tucked over the strut.
Am I crazy to want to do this. Is this safe to do? Should I just leave it alone and have everything replaced in a few years when it need struts?
Ben

No, you can't unload the spring by simply jacking up the front of the car. The spring needs to be compressed. AutoZone will let you use a set of spring compressors for free. They charge your card about $40 when you pick them up and when you take them back they give you a credit on that account.

anything on the inside of the springs needs a compressor to get at them. no dust boot and the struts may leak at the top sooner than you think. good luck, chuck.
