740 died 700

Hi
My 86 740 GLE died as I got off the freeway today and wouldn't restart. It would crank but not fire. Still had gas in the tank. Almost sputtered to life once. Seemed like a fuel problem. Checked the injector pump fuse, put my finger on the relay and turned the key. Could feel and hear a click from the relay. Crawled under to the pump cradle, put my hand on the pump and had my friend crank it.
I felt no vibvration and heard nothing from the pump. Cheapest price I found is $90 for a rebuilt pump. I was thinking of grabbing one from the junkyard and taking it down to where my car sits and swapping it out so I could get it home. Probably will tow it home tonight as it is getting late. Is it common for the pump to just quit whith no warning? Or could it be the wiring?

thanks

Could feel and hear a click from the relay.

Misleading clue. There are two relays in that case, the first one "clicks" with Key ON, but only powers the AMM and ECU.

The Fuel relay doesn't click till the FI ECU detects a spark signal from the Ignition CU. You're not apt to hear it when cranking anyhow.

Could be the Hall sensor as suggested, or possibly the FI relay circuit board needs resoldering. Or the 25 Amp fuse (I don't know where it is on 700 series, sorry).

thanks guys,

Found the problem. When I went back to get the car, I tried to start it and it sounded really funny, not the normal sound of a cranking B230F. My friend that was with me said it sounded like the timing belt snapped. Pulled back the T cover and sure enough it didn't move when we turned the engine over, some teeth sheered off.
It looked pretty old and deteriorated. The funny thing is I remember when the next door neighbor that I bought it from was putting in a front oil seal when it was still his car (Chevy guys never heard of flame traps!) and he was repositioning the T belt when he was putting everything back together. I just assumed that he must have put a new one on while he had the opportunity. I just can't see how he could have put that cracked rubberband back on. Oh well, to the FAQ section. Looks like i'll get out of this one for just the cost of a timing belt which I've got to believe can be had for under $20. I hope

Big thanks for the non-interferance engine.

Does your tach needle jump when cranking? If not, then the hall sensor or related wiring probably went bad. You can reach on the drivers side of the distri and see/feel the plastic clip. Know to break and ground out.

aly,

I didn't think about it maybe being the hall sensor until later. As of now it is still sittng where it died. I am going to retrieve it as soon as the traffic dies down. I'll give it the bounce test when I get there. It did get up to 96 degrees here today so that could have pushed a bad hall sensor over the edge. Who knows, maybe it will start up when I get there tonight.
