OD help needed 120-130

Coming into work today when the wagon was in overdrive the car "surged" the whole time. It felt like a carb problem but went away as soon as I went into fourth gear. Driving at different RPM's I was unable to duplicate the problem in other gears, only in overdrive, regardless of RPM's.
Not even sure where to begin to look.
66 220 with M41 (later type).
Thanks in advance for all your help.

-Erik

    Check fluid level first.

While under there, check the wires to the 4th gear switch and the solenoid. With Ignition ON Engine OFF, gear in 4th and switch ON, wiggle wires at connectors and where enters solenoid. Any clicking of the solenoid indicates bad connection or wire.

If all checks OK, same set up as above, wiggle shifter while listening for click at solenoid. If wiggling the shifter clicks the solenoid indicates bad 4th gear switch.

Ater all the above and still a problem, you need new actuating piston seals. OD comes off tranny, tranny can stay in auto.

Sounds like the dreaded overdrive solenoid failure mode. The J-type OD was less prone to it but nothing is forever.
Definitely do an oil change, screen cleaning and refill first. While you are down there give the wire to the solenoid a critical look. Pinch the wire double with your fingers, if the insulation cracks or flakes off it got very hot from the solenoid overheating, definite trouble. You will need to consult your manual (in your hip pocket, right?) for instructions on how to replace it and adjust it to the correct throw length once installed (extremely important!).
Hopefully, you will find a slightly low oil level and kaka on the screen so a good clean and refill will fix it.
    Mike!

How much does a solenoid replacement usually run?

What type of fuel are you using also? Like what octane? I was trying 92/super for a while and I had a weird surging and stuttering problem which I couldn't track down or make rhyme or reason of. I just tried switching back to 89-oct and I haven't had the problem since. A long shot, but worth thinking about perhaps?

Was it possibly shifting in and out of OD?

Check oil level, although that will typically not make it go in and out.

Check the wiring - that sounds like the most likely culprit to me. Possibly some funny stuff happening with the 4th gear switch?
