Don't forget your power antenna maintenance! 900

I just replaced my power antenna (on a '93 945T*), thought it would be a five minute job, ended up taking ~ 40 minutes, though I could do it again in ~ 10 minutes. The reason I replaced it was because the old antenna would only go up about halfway, the new one works great.

Anyway, I just wanted to remind people that you are supposed to do maintenance on your power antenna. Per page 1:43 of my owner's manual:

Always lower the antenna when using an automatic car wash or entering a garage. The antenna should be cleaned at least every 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or more frequently if needed. Use WD40 for cleaning.

- Spray the antenna with WD40 and wipe it clean and dry with a rag. Spray it again.

- Lower and raise the antenna, wipe it clean and dry again.

- Lower and raise the antenna 4-6 times. Make sure it is dry and free from dirt / lubricating oil.

*945T is Volvo shorthand for a 940 turbo wagon, right?

I have a 95 960 sedan. How would I replace the mast only? Mine extends fully, but is noisy. I appreciate the input!

It is not supposed to be difficult. IPD sells the mast only with instructions for replacement. I did it once on a Honda Accord and it was not hard.

IPD lists the mast only (with the plastic cord) at ~ $27.50 or so, it is on sale for ~ $21 or $22 (as of last week). Plus shipping, of course.

Is the noise from the mast, or from the motor? If it is from the mast, try lubing it down (cleaning it) with WD-40 as described above, if that doesn't work then consider replacing it. If it is from the motor itself, I have no idea how much that would be to replace.

Stand by the mast as it extends and lowers (somebody else in the driver's seat turning the radio on and off), then sit near the motor (which is in the extreme lower left corner of the wagon, under the floor covering) as it extends and lowers, you'll be able to tell where exactly the noise is coming from.

I'm pretty sure it's the motor as I already lubed the mast generously. the sound remains. In the 95 960 sedan, where is the motor, and how difficult is it to access ans replace?

Can't be too hard to find, it'll be within a few feet of where your antenna is located, look down in the trunk (assuming your antenna is on top of the back of the car), it's there somewhere.

It doesn't look like this, but it's the same general idea:

I recommend spending the $22 or so to replace your mast first, see if that solves the problem. Assuming your mast hasn't been changed, it wouldn't hurt and follows my general guidance to replace the cheapest thing first.

If you do order from IPD, they'll send you some instructions, but the instructions from this site in the FAQ are much better:

The Haynes manual was pretty useless in my work at replacing the mast (it's the UK version). Actually, I'm not impressed with the UK Haynes manual at all, the US versions of Haynes manuals on other cars I've owned have been much better, more diagrams, labled diagrams, etc.

Good advice. I replaced my mast also and do the regular maintainance as you suggested. 945T: 9 is for the 900 series. 4 is for the number of cylinders in you engine. 5 is for the number of doors (you have a wagon). T is for turbo.
