There's a relay that does this. I hate that "feature", too - removing the relay makes it stop in the "off" position.

On the 240, find the relay clipped to the cage that the center console mounts to, right hand side. If you know where your flasher is, this relay is in the same place, opposite side.

That's the AC relay. If that relay is what's keeping your blower motor on, your AC switch isn't in the off position.

I've been told that the blower comes on when the AC is activated. I take it your brick is 84 or earlier ? 84/ 85 (?) on had 4 speed blowers.

    Just a thought.

Hello ... Most all replacement fan motors come with "always on" for constant air circulation. My replacement Siemens replacement motor included a wiring choice that allowed it to actually turn off by cutting one of the wires(a jumper wire)powering the off position. My instructions actually stated the motor would have a longer life if always on(if memory serves me correctly) I actually left mine wired "always on" for some reason??? Later Gary

Some 240s had a blower motor that was always running when the
ignition was on. Some Federal(?) regulation at the time required
it to prevent the accumulation of exhaust smoke in the cabin. FWIW,
my parents' 1998 VW Jetta has a motor that can be turned off, so this
rule must no longer be in effect. I must say that I like having the
choice of shutting down the ventilation system entirely in winter
when the engine is still cold.

Both our 90s 240s have a slight air flow coming from the vents when the knob is turned all the way off. I thought it was another Volvo quirk - good to know it is part of the design. I just shut the vents closed if it is bothering me.
