Hard to start 1985 GL 200

When i start our 85 240 GL in the mornings its hard to start. Usually i have to give it gas and hold the throttle at about 2000 rpm for a few minutes so it doesnt shut off when it starts to idle around 1000 rpm....
Just to let you know... We got the head gasket replaced about a month ago because she overheated... Since then its been doing this. It only does it the first time you crank it - after that it'll crank all day long on the first try.
Is there something that could be unhooked or something that could have been messed up when it overheated? Any help is appreciated!

Sounds like it could be the engine temperature sender that got unplugged, which would be used for cold start just like a choke on a carburettor. On mechanical K-Jetronics, it is a thermal bi-metal switch. On electronic LH-Jetronics it is a sensor.

Cool!!! Where is it located.... 200

I could check that switch or sensor... where is it located in the engine compartment?

On mine '89 it's on the head under the intake runners, hard to get at unless you are used to working under there. Might just be a poor connection, or they did not re-connect. They DID have to remove it to take the head off seeing as it's on the head.

Ok. When we took the head off there was a small wire connected closer to the front of the engine and a larger plug-type one closer to the rear of the engine with a squeeze clip that was hard to get off.... and on... i'm guessing it was the one with the clip... i'll check em out when i get home tonight. Thanks for the help.

Another approach, which checks both the sensor and the wiring to it, is to make measurements of the sensor at the input to the ECU. You can either measure the resistance with the ECU connector unplugged, or voltage with it plugged in and the ignition on. (Don't plug or unplug the connector with the ignition on, however!)

The details are covered in the Brickboard 700-900 FAQ: EngineTemperatureSensors

Although you avoid having to work under the intake manifold this way, you do have to get into the passenger side kick panel (to the right of the glovebox) and back probe the connector.
