VOLVO 745 1991 Stalls in wet weather 700 1991

I've been struggling with my 745 stalling in really wet weather, while being
driven...in the worst possible places to boot.
Well, I'd replaced the wires, distro, rotor and ign coil..all to no effect...
after doing some more detective work, I managed to kill the engine in the driveway.
I found there is what looks like a speed sensor on the top of the tranny (automatic) just where the tranny is bolted to the engine below the distributor.
The wires appeared cut and frayed...so being adventurous I started wiggling them
after soaking the car with a hose and voila the car stalled...
Can anyone advise me what this probe is?... I may have permanently "fixed" the problem which means It's dead in the drive ...
any comments, also regarding replacing this (anything special as far as calibration or just replace it...) would be helpful too..
regards
Dans

That is the rpm/crank position sensor and it is a critical component of the ignition system. If the wiring gets damaged or the braided shield inside the cable gets exposed it will cause starting/stalling/stumbling problems and must be replaced. About U$35. Make sure you have the two plastic clips that keep the cable from chafing against the coolant pipe (that's what caused your problem). Don't pry on the tab when removing it as they can easily break off, simply twist and pull up. Use penetrating oil if it's stuck. Don't overtighten the bolt (about 6 ft-lbs).

Ok, i found a picture elsewhere on the board...
there is one bolt holding the sensor, just undo that and slowly ease the
sensor out?...yes the body looks like plastic...
the plastic wire insulation on the outside of the bundle is deteriorated from
heat, as It split from the point where the wires enter the top of the sensor to about 3 inches up...there is nothing supporting the wire till it enters the harness against the firewall and goes to a connector.

After the wiring dried out, the car started (as it;s been doing since Jan)...so I
RTV'd the top of the sensor and think I'll drive over to the dealer and
see if I can get a new one on Monday... thanks for confirming my suspicions...
the shield is pretty badly damaged as well but water entering the sensor kills the signal from the magentic probe... Dana
