Fan runs all the time 200 1989

My '89 blower fan runs all the time (even in the OFF position). Also, when the fan decides not to run, and I turn the switch to the 1st (low) position, the fan doesn't run!! I think this is the fan resistor problem. The fan blower sounds fine when it's on high and when it's running on low (of its own mind).

Is the resistor easy to get to? I don't want to replace the blower motor..it's a tough job and I haven't had the need to graduate to that level in volvoheaven. Just the resistor...where is it? What does it look like? Is this what's causing the problem? How much are they? ebay????

On my 81 the fan ran all the time. The switch would not allow it to be turned off. I changed around some of the connections on the back of the switch and ended up with an off postition, but no low position. I like this better. I figure that with the blower replacement being such a huge job, I don't want the fan running 100% of the time.

Yeah..that's what I'm tryin to avoid. The blower fan sounds quiet...it's just that the thing runs all the time (low). When I put the fan switch in position 1, it doesn't change a thing (I guess because it's already running). Some of these guys say that they think it's supposed to run all the time; however, I don't believe that. I dunno. Tryin to prevent a blower fan job here....not havin much luck. You think it's the switch, huh?

I can't say for sure. I just know that on my 81 I relocated a wire on the back of the swith to an open port and it gave me an off position, but I lost the low position. I like it better this way. The 89 switches are probably different than the 81's, but the idea might still work. Good luck.

    Cabbie:

I'm not so sure you have a problem. I've read that there are some model years that are set up so that the fan DOES run all the time. Whether this is true or not, I can't answer. But my '90 244 DL does the same thing as yours and has since we've owned it (quite a few years).

I used to work on an '89 240 with the fan always on low. But there was usually too much serious stuff to fix and not enough time, so I never got into the fan issue.

Maybe we'll get an answer in this thread.

If it was the resistor, your fan would never run on the low speed, even when switched off. A faulty resistor wouldn't cause the fan to run on it's own. It would cause one of the speeds to never work.

Check your switch, and make sure your AC is completely off as bosozoku suggested. That little knob can be pretty stiff at times!

    Good luck!

Check that your a/c system is actually turned off - knob all the
way counterclockwise at "0" (it should click).

The AC knob is difficult ...but I'm sure it's clicked OFF. The blower fan continues to run on low. It won't run in the 1st position. What is it??!!
