Electrical problem

It took a while to figure out what was the source of this problem in my 1988 740GL B230F, but whenever the car switches on the electric fan, the car then shudders and cuts out. Is there something that is likely to be the culprit that I can try replacing first, rather than replacing everything one piece at a time?
One bit of info, I havent tested to see whether the fan actually functions itself yet, but it will be the first thing I test tommorrow.

Check that the multiple ground point behind the L/H headlight shown below for a good connection to the metalwork of the body.

The fan probably gets it`s ground there.
The ignition power stage is also grounded there and a poor connection could cause ignition failure.

Colin, great response, never would have thought of that. Great photo too, also nice and clean under the hood but what are those strange marks on the fender? Did you close the hood on some wrenches? Ouch!

        Thanks David,
I don`t what caused those marks in the photo, they are not really there!!
The pic was taken on a very bright day and my camera (Fuji 2800 Zoom) does seem to be prone to flares and other digital artifacts under those conditions.
Otherwise it takes pretty decent pictures.
