Steering wheel 'wiggle' 700 1989

At speeds up to about 40 or so the steering wheel "wiggles" back and forth about 1/2 inch and then smooths out. I haven't had a chance to put it up on jackstands yet but I'm thinking some kinda tierod end or the like. Any thoughts or opinions? Thanks

    Possibilities:
    -tires need balancing
    -worn control rod bushings
    -worn tie rod ends
    -worn ball joints (not likely)

Could be, but I'd check tires first, ones probably out of balance, try switching one at a time front to rear and see if it goes away.

I had a wiggle like this on my 740. Turned out to be a defective tyre. It was warped in someway, and when the mechanic put it on the wheel balance machine, you could see that the rim spun with no deviations BUT the tyre tread described a snaking motion as it spun. A new tyre fixed it.
In my limited experience, an unbalanced wheel shows up at higher speeds but not at low speed. What I had (warped tyre) only showed up at low speed and disappeared at higher speeds, probably due to centrifugal forces and the rotational speed of the type damping it out.
In fact, my car is beginning to show the same symptoms again, but very slightly at the moment. It could well be I'm damaging the tyres by turning a lot of lock while stationary, and I'm buying cheap tyres that can't stand the sideways force of a heavy Volvo with power steering. At least the tyres are warranted so I just go back and get another put on.
I will try better tyres once I'm out of my current financial situation though !!!!!

        Hi,

Amazingly, I had the same experience with my Volvo. One exception though: the wiggling started when I hit around 90km/h and got worse the faster I went from that point up. By the time I hit 120, the steering wheel acted as a massager. I jacked up the car suspecting the front left tire, and put the donut on.....no more wiggle! I then replaced the tire, to find out that the old one had a cracked steel belt inside; which caused all the fury once the forces took over. It's amazing how simple the problem was, when all indications given pointed towards an expensive and complicated problem.

        Iikka.
