Eratic, Jumpy Temperature gauge .................. 760 TI not 200 700 1989

I just purchased a 760 TI (106,000 Miles) with a jumpy or jittery temperature gauge. Sometimes it jumps from midscale to 0 and at other times it just jitters about midscale.

I have seen many past postings about the infamous 200 compensation board, but I only found two postings about this similar problem on the 7XX series.

One thought I have is that the sending wire could be shorting to the block. If this were the case, would the gauge drop suddenly as this one is doing?

TIA

Dan

My 86 740 (266K) has done the same thing twice. Both times I replaced the thermostat to fix the problem.

Thanks for the tip. The guy I am buying the car from thought that may be the problem and just replaced the thermostat.

He had the car in storage for a while and 'fixed it up' to sell.... new tires, new radiator and thermostat, new battery, timing belt, new fuel pump, one new headlight assembly, carrier bearing and seal, new headliner, repaired power drivers seat ......

I plan to confirm that the breaks and radius arm bushings are in good shape, tune it up, and replace the belts and hoses. Hopefully it will be a great car.

when the wire shorts to the block, the gauge would go to the red. pull the cluster and tighten all the screws around the circuit board. lotsa times that'll fix a 740 gauge problem. good luck, chuck.

Thanks for the feedback. I figured grounding the wire would send it one way or the other. I guessed wrong.
