With enough money, of course, anything is possible. However, this would be not be an easy swap. This car was designed around the IRS as far as the underbody is concerned. I also don't understand why you would want to do this. The IRS is generally not troublesome. It is not that complicated if it does need fixing, And of course it improves the handling of the car. Unless you are dropping in very powerful V8 engine up front and need more torque handling, it doesn't seem to make much sense.

Why would you want to swap them? Are you having problems with the irs?

yes, in fact the only reason i asked about this is because i plan on getting either a 944ti, or a 964/S90 someday, and to make it my fun car i would like to drop in a nice beastly 350...or maybe something bigger...but i love the body/interior on the 960/S90 compared to the 940 since its not much of a jump from my 744's interior/semi-hidious front end and wheel-well accents. i am just aware of the problems that can come along with lots of tourqe and horsepower with an IRS that isnt specifically designed for it. but thanks for the comments anyway, i was just wondering. -steve

There is a guy named Russ Converse in Maine that has been putting Ford 302's in Volvo's for a long time. There is also a company called Jags That Run (JTR) that puts Chevy 350's in Jaguars. Either of these places might be able to tell you more about how this could be done. Since Jags have IRS, you may want to start with JTR.

Ross has put a 393 into a 960. No problems yet but I don't think they have really tortured it. It has made a round trip out to the Ford anniversary show in Dearborn and back. You can see it on his site.

The Volvo rear ends, be they beam or irs, are quite stout and overbuilt. The carriers are typically Dayna 30's.
