Fuel pump running 900 1994

Hi all,
I purchased a nice 94 940 about 3 weeks ago and have noticed that every time I shut the car off, the fuel pump continues to run for about 15 seconds. It always happens, so I would think it is normal. I have searched the site and my owners manual and couldn't find a thing on it. Is this normal for a 940 NA ?

Thanks, Palmer

hi palmer, make sure it is not your electric antenna that keeps running after shutting down your engine.usually a bad antenna will keep running about the same time that you have stated.try to disconnect the electric plug at the antenna and shut the car off and see what happens.i hope this helps, good luck.charles.

Charles, you are the man. 900 1994

Well, its time to be a little sheepish. I opened the trunk and the shut off the engine and the sound is coming from behind the cover in the trunk where the antenna is. This antenna motor sounds nothing like the one in my Saab, maybe because it is hooked up to nothing. Thanks for the responses guys, and great idea Charles. Now I will unhook the motor until I get the power one repaired.
      Palmer.

      Hi Charles,
That is a great idea! The car has an aftermarket non moving antenna and whom ever did it may have left the motor in place.
      Thanks,

      Palmer

My friend had the same problem on his 240. Turned out to be a problem with his ECU (that part was fried). On the 240, the ECUs are evidently interchangeable, so he got one at a junk yard. I know on the later Volvos, the ECUs are not interchangeable and you must get one from Volvo. I do not know about a 1994 940. Spook, do you know?

    Dear Palmer,

Good a.m. and may this find you well. Are you 100% sure it's the fuel pump?

Could it not be the cooling fan that you hear?

The fuel pump typically shuts down the instant you stop the car, because switching-off the ignition cuts the flow of power to the pump.

Indeed, 940s are set up such that if the RPM/crank sensor - which sits atop the transmission bell housing - fails, the fuel pump stops working instantly. This ensures that if the engine stops turning - e.g., because of collision damage - that fuel does not get sent to the engine. This shut-down minimizes fire danger.

If, though, the fuel pump is actually running, that suggests there is an electrical fault, which should be seen by a Volvo specialist.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    spook

      Hello Spook,
      Good morning to you.
The noise is coming from the fuel tank. I am pretty certain it is a fuel pump, does this system had a pre-pump inside the fuel tank and the regular high pressure pump outside the tank? The car is running and starting very well. It has the Regina fuel injection if that makes a difference. In my old carburated 66 chevy, I had an electric fuel pump mpounted on the frame back near the tank and it would do the same thing after I shut it off. Of course this was carbed.
      Thanks,

      Palmer
