Accurate checking of oil on the 960 900

i find that checking oil in the morning is more accurate,or after the car has sat awhile.i've noticed that checking after a fill-up or even a little longer than that the level is not the same as it was on the morning check.i guess it takes longer for the oil to settle in the pan on these engines.having 2 of these beasts, they both do the same so i doubt there's any blockage in the return passages.my point is if you pull off the hwy. and fill up,check the level, thinking it's low you could add too much oil.anyone else noticed this?

Accurate checking of oil on the 960 900

I have two also dm960. I always check the car's oil in the a.m.

I find it depends a lot of the variation depends on the type of oil you use.(syn, dino, PAO, ester, 0W, 10W, etc...) Some oils stick to the metal longer than others after shutdown and take longer to drip back to the pan. If I wait overnight, that takes care of any variations in the properties of the oils.

p700walk,thanks for the feed-back,i try to allow at least an hour for an oil change since it just keeps dripping(more than other engines).on the next change i'll pour in a 1/2qt. of oil and see how long it takes to start draining. i of course do the change while warm(hot).i knew there was a difference between hot and cold, but i think it takes a little longer than the 5 min. to get all the oil back to the pan.thanks again, dave

    dm960,

Here is the Alldata diy information on checking oil. Note the difference in the amount to top off with-- Hot vs. Cold.

    "Engine Hot

Wait at least 5 minutes after the engine has stopped to allow the oil to drain completely back to the sump.
If level is at MIN, top up with max. 0.5 liter.

    Engine Cold

The most accurate check is obtained by dipping the oil with the engine cold before starting.
If level is at MIN, top up with 1 litre."

I heard the same thing as well regarding these engines needing more time to drain for an accurate reading, but I haven't been told the exact reason.

Even with a hot engine, I think 5 minutes is far too short in the 960 series...too many nooks and crannies for that oil to hide. As you say, much beter to do it with a cold engine.
