fluid recamdations 200

I just bought a 88 244, and am going to do fluids tommorrow, I want to go synthetic for rear end, tranny (5spd, not 4spd with od) and engine oil. I want to go with heavier engine oil because of its age, miles, and some smoking.
so what do you guys recomend? I see in the owners manual that it calls for atf type f in the tranny.... this is strange to me, but what do you think?
so anyway.... whats good to use for all three areas?
also.... off my subject, If you see the small clock and tach package for sale on e-bay, check your pull n save first! I almost bid $35 for the package and went to junk yard today and found several tachs available and a small clock with all the wiring.... price? $5.00! I also found the opional 3 storage area guages with harness and bezel. Price? yet another $5.00.
I also got the guages from a rallye cluster, and would like to use the fuel guage and temp guage and switch out the oil pressure and voltage guage from the 3 cluster I got...so I have all rallye guages... I kind of wanted to leave the big clock in dash and replace the origional temp and fuel guages with the tach.... not possible.... (or easy at any rate...no cutouts for the tach on right side....has anybody done this?)
so is it possible to use the rallye guages? are the voltages the same? can I splice the harness to make these work? they look like better guages... or if not I can sell em or send em to someone...
sorry for rambling but I am excited bout my own volvo and looking forward to tweaking it....

I tried Mobil 1 ATF in my M47, but I like Red Line MTL better - easier shifting.

Mobil 1 gear lube went into the diff on the 244, but the 245 has a No-Spin and so it gets conventional gear lube with the special additive for LSD's.

All my bricks now run on Mobil 1 10w-30.

thanks all! especiallly for reading my long post! (I was pretty tired last night...) mobil 1 and amsol type f it is!
certainly will not attempt to modify insturment cluster... large tach it is, with small clock.
concerning the cause of smoking... Its not really bad, intermittant, infrequent, and not heavy. I suspect the 240K has something to do with it. I intend to do a compression test. am not really worried about it because I bought the car prepared to swap the engine if that is deemed necessary.
Its a sunny warm day here in colo, so am going to do justice to red brick.

I would determine the cause and repair options of the smoking problem before any attempts to mask it. As for the clock, consider that most digital radios have a clock function. A large tach is more accurate and this plus original gauges will increase the value and exclusivity of the car.

"I want to go with heavier engine oil"

You can check the viscosity in cSt at 100 degrees C on the motor oil company web sites. SAE 30 and SAE 40 are ranges, so you may find some oils on the thin side of their ranges, and some on the thick side.

The Bentley recommends 10W-30 for later 240s, or 15W-40 for hot conditions.

Thin 30: Most *W-30 oils, including Mobil 1.
Thick 30: Some *W-30 oils marketed for "high mileage engines", heavy duty diesel engines, or meeting European ACEA A3, B3, or B4 ratings (instead of ACEA A1, A5, B1, or B5 ratings).
Thin 40: Most 5W-40 and 10W-40 oils. Probably best to use synthetic in these grades.
    Thick 40: Most 15W-40 oils.

I would go with either amsoil or mobil 1 for the engine, same for diff. and redline for the Tranny. although redline may not be readily available locally, you may need to order it. then use amsoil ATF.

It is true ATF is for the M47. I had thought too that gear oil was the proper stuff, however I was proven wrong! ATF is basically a very thinned out oil anyway, well in some respects.

How bad is the brick smoking??? I would try running some sea foam through it BEFORE you change the oil (it is a detergenet that dilutes the oil). run your tank to less than 1/4, then pour a can in, then run 75mph down the interstate until you are almost dry, refill, then go home and change the oil!

If that doesn't help you may have another problem.

    M47 Type-F fluid recamdations. 200 1988

Fortunately the topic of Manual Transmission fluids was just covered. Here's a link to a previous post I made regarding synthetic Type-F transmission fluid:
    http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=742215

Regarding the 'Rally' gauges that you acquired. Are you refering to the 3-gauge pod to the right of the instrument cluster? If yes, and one of these 52mm gauges shows a picture of a gas pump on it, this is actually a vacuum gauge (fuel economy gauge). Personally, I would avoid a major headache in trying to refit the instrument cluster and just swap the tach and clock (and this is what I've done with my vehicle).

    God bless,
    Fitz Fitzgerald.
