Preparing for A/C Surgery 200 1984

I want to get that old A/C working before summer.
Any suggestions on what i'll need, methods of diagnosis, etc.?

I also recommend going with an all-newer style setup. An empty AC system corrodes quickly, ruining several of the components.

I looked into fixing mine a few years back ('83 R-12 system.) It would have cost at least as much to fix what I had than to replace it all with R134a components.

If you're going to keep the car for any length of time, I'd strongly advise buying the factory R134a conversion kit. Earlier 240 air conditioners are marginal under good circumstances. The kit uses the new (91-93) style evaporator, which increases efficiency quite a bit.

Take it to a shop, have them do a vacuum leakdown test and pinpoint any leaks first. Then plan accordingly.

If it has been empty for even a short time, you are going to have to replace the receiver dryer.

hi there i read on the B.B. that you can switch over to the rotary type compressor with bolt on parts from the newer style setup you could get at the boneyard. but i cant confirm this. i say this because im running a old york compressor on a 1970 f100 pickup and it puts alot of extra strain on the old 302. it must really pull down the 4 banger. just a thought. i would recomend flushing out the entire ac system either way. it is kind of a hassle but some real nasty stuff came out of my 240 system when i did the flush .good luck
