Has anyone come up with a clever way to flush the late 240 power steering? 200 1992

Hello All:

Has anyone come up with a good way to flush the power steering on the 91+ 240 power steering, that is the one with the rectangular integral reservoir?

I have recently power flushed my auto tranny and I would love to do the same with my power steering...

Am I stuck sucking out the reservoir with a turkey baster on this one? Enlighten me!

Thanks!

    Herb,

I have experimented with both 1) turkey basting the resivoir and 2) breaking the lines off the rack... the baster method is much better. Do it two or three times over the course of a month and all will be fine. I also started using the Magnafine in-line trans & power steering filters from IPD (well worth the money, in my opinion) as my power steering fluid was black as night before several changes. You could always suspend a couple of cheap magnets on a string in the resivoir if cash flow is low.... Peace & Love, Jon

On my 89 I used the turkey blaster method.
I used Castrol ATF type F (2.59 USD per quart) and a turkey blaster from the dollar store.

I did once and drove for a few days and did it again a few days later. That way I think I got mostly new fluid in now, although it is not all new.
This way it's clean, easy, nothing breaks.

    Additional Question 200 1992

In order to get most of the fluid out with the Baster, should the steering wheel be turned on direction or the other to bring the fluid up higher into the reservoir?

On 740s, the reservoir has barbs on the hose fittings that can break off when you try to get the hose off. You can flush by loosening the return fitting at the rack, or just do the baster routine which works fine.

Use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF for fluid: works great and causes the system to last forever.

I loosen the fittings at the rack, and let it drain overnight. That'll get almost all the old fluid out in a single try.

Filters are a REALLY bad idea for either tha P/S or A/T because as they get dirty (which is what they are supposed to do) the severly restrict flow. You can loose 75% of your AT's cooler flow between the restriction in the cooler itself and an external filter. No flow = no lube for an AT, and no P/S for them.
