Ken -
The 1986+ 240s have the high level brake light, and when the changes for that were designed, Volvo, in its infinite wisdom, changed other tings, too.
Pre-1985 have two brake lights per side, 1986+ have one. The marker light (lower outer light) becomes marker+brake light. It uses a dual filament bulb so a 3-connector bulb holder is required so a new circuit board must be used.
Driver's side is easy - new circuit board and a little carving. Passenger side is another kettle of fish.
Note that the bulb holders have three locking lugs, one being larger and serving as a key to ensure correct installation. On the PS lower outer, the use of a pre-1986 bulb holder won't work - has only two connectors. The 1986+ type (it must be a white one) will fit in, but the connectors won't touch the right parts of the circuit board.
WHY? Because the location of the large slot for the large lug is different. Fiddle around with it and you will figure out a way. I made a sort of bridge that works - so far.
Easiest is to get a PS unit from a 1986+ car. Keep looking - eBay or boneyard - paying $70 or more for a non-Volvo unit approximates insanity IMHO. Note that a Volvo unit will have the double-ring Volvo date stamp on eash lens. Before bidding on an eBay offering, make the seller tell you what the stamp says.
Good Luck,
Bob
