Water pump replacement 200 1989

Yesterday I noticed the sweet sweet smell of antifreeze as I pulled away from a stop light, got home and looked under the hood and it appears that the water pump is leaking out of the front seal. The bearing seems fine (no play when I tried to wiggle the fan and what not. I purchased a Bosch replacement pump at my local Pep Boys (new, not remanufactured) and plan on installing it tomorrow evening.

Just wondering if there are tips or quirks that I'll need to know about to ensure a speedy recovery for my ailing brick.

How's your timing belt? You're got a good start on that job too, if it needs doing.

One warning: Be careful not to drop any of the pump nuts down inside the timing belt cover (maybe stuff a rag into the opening)? I dropped one in, and tried unsuccessfully to fish it out with a magnet. I took my chances and left it in there. Luckily it didn't jam against the timing belt and chew it up.

It would also be a good time to replace the thermostat, hoses and belts if you need to. Dan

In addition to what kurt said, when I did mine last weekend, I started to put the bottom seal (return hose, metal red thingy) on wrong, then caught it and corrected it. Place it over the tube then push the bottom part of the pump onto it, once you tighten all the bolts down you will be fine, I had put it in the pump first and if I would have continued it may have ruined the seal.

Also, the front of the pump has 4 double sided threaded screws, use a vice grips to twist each one out and re-install on your new water pump, then you can put the fan and belts back on!

It took me about 30 min to realize that I needed to use THOSE screws, not the ones I just purchased from the hardware store!

I find it easier to install the studs with two nuts, and you run less risk of damaging the threads (not that anything on the water pump is all that delicate..).

press the waterpump firmly against the upper seal while before tightening the nuts

you can use a prying bar for this to obtain this force upwards
because some holes are lightly slotted to give a little upward movement

also before installingn check the seal of the metal 1/4" return tube(interior)
this metal tube is held in place with one nut
