95 940 temp gauge irratic 900 1995

my temp guage has never indicated hot, but it seems to fluctuate from 0 to mid range..and will stay at about 1/4 if I am driving on the freeway in cold weather. is this indicative of a bad temp sender or maybe lack of a thermostat?

any advice appreciated.

    Likely a failed thermostat: start there.

      agreed..mine did exactly that...

      tip you dont have to drain the system....get some washer type hose and feed it into the coolant tank and down the main hose as far as you can then syphon the coolant into a 2ltr bottle...(dont suck o nthe hose to get it started coolant is poisenous...fillt the hose with water to start)...gets the coolant low enough to do the job then you can pour the bottle backinto the tank after....

      works on an 850 too (i have both and have done stats on both!)

        Mine was erratic on the 960 as well. Sometimes acted normal then would go full cold then hang 1/2 way between normal and cold. Found the thermostat cracked/broken in 4 places.
