Power Steering Rack 200

I'm about to change out the power steering rack on my 1987 240. Is there an easy way to ensure that I won't mess up the alignment when I do it or is an alignment right after a must anyway?
Ken

Adjust the tie rods as close as possible to the existing ones, then get it aligned.

If you are putting in the same kind of rack, make 2 measurements on the old one first—on each side, measure (and record) the distance from the Tie Rod End bolt to the outer edge of the rack tube (with boot slipped away).

Then adjust the Tie Rod Ends on the "new" rack to the same measurements, and you should be very close, if not dead on.

I just found a great used rack under 100.00. So now I'm ready to go. Thanks again for the advice.

        Good deal.

Just be sure it's the same as your old rack, or the inner measuring point at the rack end may be different. In that case, maybe you could fine an inner reference point on the car body.

That might work, with the steering wheel locked/tied in the straight ahead position throughout the whole operation.

        Good luck,

        Bruce
