780 RUST WARNING! 700

Hi all you 780 owners!

In the process of fixing up my 780, I have found what could be a characteristic problem - rust around the rear windows.

When I bought mine, there was a little surface rust around the rear window trim. I didn't think much of it. It was a northern car and I thought some scratches or minor damage could have allowed road salt to get in. Wrong! IF YOU SEE THIS ON A CAR YOU ARE CONSIDERING BUYING - RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There were several things I wanted my body man to take care of so he said he would do that too. When he pulled it apart, he found the problem. There is a drain system for the rear side windows. If you pull the rear inside panel, you will see it (and also if you have the rust problem). There are several plastic hoses that run from the window frame to the bottom of the car. The rust problem happens when the hoses become clogged so that the window doesn't drain.

Originally, my body guy (Lee) was going to pull it all out and sandblast the trim and repaint it (since it costs $900). The window assembly comes out as a unit. Mine was so eaten up with rust that if we tried to dissassemble it to sandblast it, it would have fallen completely apart. I am trying to get parts now from a guy I found on ebay. He says he has the parts in good shape but he hasn't completely removed it yet so it's still iffy. (by the way, I should have a good rear window glass if anyone wants it at a good price).

I encourage you all to at least blow air through the drain system to keep it clear. If you are really industrious, pull the inside panel and take a look. You might even pull the window and check it out completely. Especially if you are keeping the car long term.

I am glad to answer any questions you might have about this. It is difficult but not unbearable. I was really happy with my 940 turbo but my stepdaughter needed a first car and I wanted her to have one I knew she could depend on. My 780 is a beauty and she will live, but at a big cost.

Check yours out before the problem gets too big and let me know if I can help!

Blessings!
Patrick
