Exorcising my cursed B-20. A couple of questions. 140-160 1973

OK, put on my new water pump and rehabbed radiator today. Haven't fired them up yet, but they certainly look watertight, anyway. Keep those fingers crossed.

In the process I discovered a couple of mildly unsettling things.

1.) My oil leak was coming from the fuel pump, which was dangling by a single bolt. Can I reuse that gasket? What size are those bolts? Should I use washers?

This explains why I was all of a sudden having trouble starting in the a.m. Guess it wasn't the cold snap.

2.) The hose from my crankcase breather goes -- nowhere. Where should it attach?

I have the SUs with the round air cleaners.

If you can envision this set-up, I have a hose that goes from the oil cap to the fore end of the intake manifold. And I have a hose that goes from the master cylinder to the middle of the intake manifold, with a T joint that heads off to the plastic thing on the firewall shaped like four spheres (vacuum amplifier? I have no idea).

There's no obvious place for the breather hose to go.

Thanks in advance for the anticipated wisdom.

The 4 balls do not make either the car or the engine more masculine.
They are a vacuum reservoir, so that you might still have
some power brakes on startup or other times when manifold vac is very
    low.
You may have a charcoal canister hooked into the system also, which
collects gasoline vapor from the tank and holds it till engine
vacuum is high enough to breath it in.

Fuel pump is held on with two 5/16" NC bolts, about an inch long. I use flat washers and lockwashers there. There should be a plastic spacer with a gasket on either side of it. Make sure the spacer isn't cracked, and put it back on with two fresh gaskets. This is a good place for gasket sealer.

When plumbed the way yours seems to be, the hose from the oil cap usually goes to a fitting on the forward air cleaner. If you don't have such a thing, just get one of those mini air cleaners and stick that on the oil cap instead of the hose.

And the the crankcase breather goes hose up to the front of the intake manifold?

I've never seen that oil cap doohickey. Where are they found?

There are two ways of plumbing it:

1a) Teardrop-shaped oil trap -> PCV valve -> intake manifold.
1b) Oil filler cap -> air cleaner.
1c) Oil filler cap is filled with flame-trapping wire mesh.

        2a) Teardrop-shaped oil trap -> air cleaner.
2b) Oil filler cap -> restrictor orifice on intake manifold.
2c) Oil trap has a mesh flame trap where the hose connects.

In either case, any vacuum accessories (e.g. brake booster) must connect *directly* to the manifold vacuum. In version 1, you can T it to the hose between the PCV valve and the manifold. In version 2, it needs to hook up to an unrestricted port.

If you have nowhere to connect to an air cleaner, use a separate air cleaner -- those mini ones are commonly available at parts store chains along with the red or blue pulleys and all that other engine dress-up stuff.
