Are my AW71 dying on 240 Turbo 83? 200 1983

Hi!,
I have a question about my AW71, I hear a noise comming from the aw71 on D, when I need force, and when I put R, I need to go 2500 rpm to start to backward movement. I check the oil and seems ok, I make the transmission oil change about 5 months ago and 2000 miles drived... It is time to change the tranny? any idea whats happen?

Thanks!

Edwin

    Ed,

I'd drain, then drop the tranny pan. Clean or replace the mesh screen filter on the underside of the valve body, clean all the crud out of the pan, clean the pan magnet, replace the pan using a new gasket and flush using the procedure from the 700/900 FAQ. The AW71 is basically the same on all 200/700/900. If that doesn't help a pick and pull (used)tranny may be the next step. I recently put a AW71 from a 90' 745T in my son's 83'244Ti. Nice fresh auto box and it only require swapping the tail cone and speedo gears from the old box to the new. That was required because the '83 has a mechanical speedometer. We also replaced the rear seal and bushing, cross shaft bushings, front seal, soleniod o rings and screen filter before putting it in. Filled it with fresh Mobile 1 synthetic ATF. No leaks and a nice solid, smooth shifting tranny. Virtually like new ... all for under a hundred bucks. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
