I got rear ended today... 200 1980

...and I wasn't even in a car accident:

Now, my car gets pretty good gas mileage, but it pings like crazy if I don't run the most expensive octane gas, and I can't afford that right now.

What are some ways to keep the engine from pinging, but not sacrafice too much mileage? I would really LOVE to only have to spend $1.95/gal ...

Stupid gas prices!!!

Sorry no sympathy from this side of the Pond.(UK)
Put 50L = 13.2 US gal in the 740 at the weekend Cost? £40 = $63.50
(95 octane unleaded the cheapest we get)
And you think you`ve got problems ??????
Colin.

What is your commute distance? Driving 90 miles round trip per day to work, I'd almost be working for free! :-p

About 60 Miles.
Luckily not at my expense (company van). You`re right, I`d be working for the "fun" of it otherwise. All I pay for, very expensively, is my "pleasure motoring" if you can call it that. To be fair, one advantage of living in a small country is that by US standards we don`t have to travel far to get where we want to go. (Been to the US of A, big place!)
Colin.

That explains why the cadilac can exist in the states. 200 1980

Ah the joys of having an oil millionaire for a president and an army and airforce to ensure a constant supply of the stuff. In Australia, a full tank for a 240 will cost you you back $50 Australian (that's a fifth of my pay packet working in a supermarket).

Since my parents god rid of the '83 240 wagon I used to drive, I suddenly have lots of money to spend building my own swedish gas guzzler. Why? I really don't know.

Just a quick aside........ 200

President GW Bush made several $millions when he sold his interest in the Dallas "Texans" professional baseball temm. Prior to that, when he attempted to follow his father's footsteps in the oil business, he failed. Went bankrupt. GHW Bush founded the Zapata oil company and made a huge pile, back when the OPEC folks sold their oil for $2.50 a 42 (US) gallon barrel, or was that $0.25 a barrel?

Just a little FYI to keep the facts straight.

Also, hereabouts gasoline prices contain about 40 cents per gallon in taxes, different in other states. Check your prices for the amount that is tax.

Regards,

Bob

Ease up on the gas pedal or retard the timing a bit. I use regular.

Damn I thought Connecticut was bad. However, we've never paid over $2 per gallon. Last year we got close- most I've paid was $1.95 or 1.97. Either way, the whole rest of the world is jealous of our LOW prices.

And it's only gonna get worse. Damn SUV's.

Rob's right. In Western Europe prices are around 4 - 4.70 USD per gallon. Do not think 2 $/G is the roof.

Sure you've heard about the terrible broken fuel line that leads into Phoenix (maybe you did). People all over are waiting in line, getting angry waiting for fuel. Some places are charging almost $4 a gallon!? Those places I will not be a patron to ever again if I can make a note of them in my mind. People are riding bikes to work here :-) The volvo's redlining it at the moment. Gas is expensive everywhere else too I know. Is there some kind of fad going on with taking pictures of other volvo's while riding in your car? ... i like it!!! Have a good day ;-)

Nah, I didn't even realize that there was a Volvo ahead of me.

It's pretty much impossible to go down a street in Portland and not see a Volvo of SOME kind.

I see Amazons, 122's, 1800's, 140s, 160s, 240's, 700's, etc... everywhere... A man down the block has a couple of 122s, and a 1800 in the driveway...

There's another 122 down the street.

It's no wonder IPD has done well here in Portland.

I heard about Phoenix... This is getting insane. I'm about to start using the gas I have in the lawn mower if this keeps up...

Check for vacuum leaks. Any unmetered air will make the engine run lean. I have a '87 240 (LH Jet) and found many holes in the intake tubing leading to the manifold. After replacing it, I was able to reduce the pinging I heard when accelerating.
