burned up speedometer 200 1989

My 1989 Volvo 240 DL has burnt up it's speedometer. More precisely the circuit card next to the speedometer. It is a KX10042 instrument cluster. First the speedometer bounces around, then the smoke, car dies. Car will restart. Took readings of the electrical hookups and didn't notice anything that seemed unusual. (No grounds or shorts.) A second unit burned up the exact same way. I measured the rear axle sensor unit in my daughter's Volvo and got the same resistance reading.

I know I am responding to this message from 12 yrs ago, but my daughter's 1989 Volvo 240 speedometer just had this same fate:

bouncing speedometer, then smoke, car dies

Her car will not restart. My plan was to open dash to examine burned connectors/wires and while open it sounds like I should replace the speedometer. What else should I be doing while having the dash open? Any direction would be appreciated.

Well, does yours have the same cause as the others noted in this thread? It is about the only way I know of you can "burn up" a speedometer, and it is entirely a DIYer's fault.

        Thanks, Art

Just jumped on this forum this morning and didn't notice how messages are set up. Now I see how things are set up and see the other responses.

I had someone work on the car last week and yes, probably plugged wrong wires because this car doesn't have a tachometer.

Thanks for responding and helping me notice all the other posts about this.

Ouch, I am sorry. You have several options depending on how deep you like to get into fixing things, but the obvious choice is to replace the speedo gauge unit. I think some people call this the "head."

Welcome to the board, and yes it is different from any other you will find anywhere. It is one wheel I've come to be grateful someone re-invented.

JohnVon, if yours is like mine in my 87 240 DL, it sounds like to me you have hooked up the wire coming from your coil to the back of the circuit board of the gauge cluster. This wire is for cars that have a tachometer in them. If you connect it to the back, then it sends voltage to the smaller circuit board on the side of the speedo and burns it up. Again, if it is like mine, connect only two of the single wires to the back and not the third one if you have no tach.

Check last months listings for title "Speedometer Days" multiple postings by Art Benstein. He has provided much info on the speedometer cicuit for these cars.

Which printed circuit board, and more specifically which part on the board is burning up? One of the guys at work has a theory about electronic components. He believes they must work on smoke, because when you let the smoke out, they quit working. Seriously though......

Are you referring to the board with the odometer motor is attached or the larger board to which the other gages attach (back of the whole cluster)? The small board has a three pin board edge connector for power, ground, and sensor signal. This board is also connected to the larger board through three pins. Two of the pins are labeled "+". These run the +12 Volts through a fuse on the larger board. This fuse is actually a small piece of flex circuit above the speedometer. Two screws hold this flex circuit (fuse) to the large board. The other pin connects a signal out of the speedometer control IC to the large board. This is a pulsed signal indicating road speed and goes to the ECU.
