Dead 740 GL motor

I have a 1990 740 GL 4CYL. Single OHC...Non-turbo.
While poking down the road it dropped a valve into number 1 Cylinder.
I am trying to find another engine. Anyone tried JapaneseDomesticMotors??
Anyone tried rebuilt motors?? I thought what happened to my car was rare to
unheard of........Any comments on that...or why it happened...Maybe metal fatigue???...Does anyone know what year VOVLO went back to making the B230 engines more robust. I understand that the early years had smaller engine parts...valve rods..springs..??
Thanks for all of the answers that I hope to get.

Dropping a valve is unheard of, at least to me: perhaps George Downs has more knowledge of these. Anyway, given the damage to the engine, just shop for a used engine from a boneyard. Don't bother rebuilding your existing one. Look for a 1990+. The best are the B230FD engines from 1994-95.
