Which oil cooler, oil/water or oil/air? 700

I am putting together a working B230ft from two hosts: an '88 and a '92. The engine will go into my '88 745ti. I can use the original oil-to-air exchanger, or I can use the newer oil-to-water cooler. Which one should I use?

I searched for a couple of hours, thinking I would find all kinds of archived discussions on this topic. I found a couple of posts: One said the oil/water cooler on the B230ft is "problematic"; a few more posts talked about water hoses bursting; and a final post said the oil/water cooler is "very effective".

John S., which one would you use? ;)

Thanks,

A

I think the oil to air is by far superior for one simple reason. Even on a hot day the air temp may get to slightly over 100 degrees. I do not think the temp of water in the cooling system ever get that low.

Either will work well. The oil/water version will be an easier installation, but the hose connection at the bottom is a weak point. This hose becomes oil wetted from oil changes and can leak and burst. It is all downhill from there as the engine overheats....

If you want to use the later intercooler, induction system, radiator, and electric fan you must use the oil/water heat exchanger. The late style radiator and intercooler are too wide for the air/oil heat exchanger.

If you want to use the air/oil heat exchanger you must use the early intercooler and radiator. This installation is less maintenance since you don't have two more coolant hoses to watch.

Hmmm, that's a tough one. I cannot say there is any REAL advantage in one over the other...overall. I would use what you have, as opposed to purchasing anything new. If you go with an oil/air cooler you need to mount it, and that would generally be infront of the A/C condenser, which WILL hurt A/C performance, if you go oil/water you are putting a lot of extra heat into the cooling system. Our '87 744TI has the oil/water system, and it has worked flawlessly, and does not leak a drop. It also has a liquid cooled turbo, so our coolant can get real hot real fast.

Definitly oil/water. Much more effective in reducing heat.
