I must be retarded (Identifying brakes) 700

Okay, so I read the faq on identifying brake set ups, but I must have been dropped on the head as a child, so could somone please help me out?

In looking at the identifying codes over the passenger front light, I am looking at the second row on the right. It ends in 0017 then there is another box to the right of the long string with the number 31 in it. Now the faq says that

" Go to position "E" (end of the second line on the right). The following codes apply:

2: Girling Front, ATE Rear
3: DBA Front, ATE Rear
4: Girling Front and rear
5: DBA Front, Girling Rear "

Um, okay, none of the numbers end in 2,3,4,5. Is it 3?

Thanks, I do not want to buy the wrong thing!

I think the information you have is for 940s and late model (facelift) 740s from 1990 on. The earlier models had another plate elswhere on the car.
This is the plate on my `90 740 with the brake code arrowed.

If your plate is not the same format as this then the brake code must be somewhere else.Click Here for further info.

Colin.

You didn't give the year/model group. Mine is 85 740gle. I found another data plate located on the drivers side, rear door post. It actually gives chasis, brakes, etc. Can't speak for the Girlings, but Bendix is actually stamped on the calibers.

Sorry,

Its an 88 744Ti with ABS.
There is no second plate on the door.

Well, to be absolutely sure. I would remove one wheel, and look over the caliber, it should be stamped somewhere on the caliber.

right, and at the very least, you can compare the pictures of the bendix calipers versus the girling ones. but i think you're right. girling actually says girling lightly on it on somewhere on the caliper.
