Harmonic Balancer removal 700 1990

I am having a difficult time removing the harmonic balancer on 90 744ti. The nut was removed with out much problem. The difficulty lies in removing the balancer. I have tapped on it and pried on it but without success. I have also checked the FAQ and archives. I am somewhat afraid of a standard pulley removal tool do to the fact that I had a harmonic balancer separate before. Is there a tool that grabs the inside of the pulley or some other way to remove it?
Thanks

I doubt that you used a standard harmonic balancer remover and separated a balancer. A standard remover uses the pulley mounting threaded holes in the center of the balancer to pull the center of the balancer!! You may have used a standard gear remover which yanks on the outside of the balancer and will damage EVERY balancer removed.

Now back to your problem. You might be able to pull your balancer by using a socket or deep socket in the middle of a 1/4" thick plate of metal that you have drilled (use the crankshaft pulley) to the pattern of the threaded holes in your balancer. Then use longer bolts (long enough but not too long to bottom if you get my drift) to pull the plate against the socket which is pusshing on the crank snout...the bolts should easily pull the harmonic balancer off the snout. Tighten the three bolts as evenly as you can!

You might try the candle wax system. Requires a propane torch that will burn upside down (special fitting) and a throw-away long candle.

Heat the crankshaft/pulley interface carefully, being aware that the touch of the flame to any plastic or rubber parts or the rubber ring in the pulley will cause problems and maybe unexpected exppenses.

Touch the candle to the interface. The idea is to get enough heat in there to keep the wax liquid so its surface tension will pull it into the joint. Try tapping on the center part of the pulley with a small hammer while doing the candle touch.

Re-heat and do it several times. If the wax burns off, just try it again.

Dunno what else to try that won't sacrifice the pulley or the wallet,

Good Luck,

Bob

I've taken off several balancers and most have just pulled off with only hand pressure. On one I used a gear puller to start it and it only took a small amount of turning of the puller center bolt. I hooked the puller on the rearmost pulley rim. Maybe you could work some PBlaster into it and let it do its magic overnight.
