Cleaning Out Rocker Panels 200

I've seen several references on this board about how cleaning the leaves,
etc, out of the rocker panels can help avoid rust.

Since I'm a big fan of avoiding rust, I decided to do this on my '92 240.
But I'm a little unsure about how to proceed.

I've got the carpet pulled back, and near the front of each panel I can see one access hole sealed by a 2" plastic plug. But that's all. Can anyone give me more specific instructions? Do you go in through this hole? From the
outside? How do you get the debris out?

Thanks a lot,

DS

Make sure all the drain slits along the bottom pinch weld are open -poke with a thin screwdriver, vacuum and/or blow with compressed air. The lower back corner of the rocker is a bad place for moisture to collect in debris and start rust -suction/blow that area as clean as you can. Do your doors while you're at it. If you see any signs of rust starting on the inside, treat it now to prevent or at least delay a perforation. There is a rubber knockout buried in the undercoat in the rear wheel well that will give you additional access to the rocker if needed.

    DS
I just did this on my 245 project, haven't had time to do a page on it yet but here are the raw photos.

As you can see there are leaves in all 3 holes also take off the seat belt retractor, bunches get behind it and further back, use a shop vac, the smaller the hose the better to reach into the holes and get the leaves and misc crud out.
    Good luck

Thanks, Daveshan--those pics tell the whole story.

Some Volvo designers were absolutely asleep at the switch when they set up this "flush and slush" cowl vent system. I've gotten really paranoid about parking near trees--esp in the spring when they're dropping all sorts of junk, and when the leaves start falling.

IPD sells a cowl vent cover--but it only fits the pre-1986, which have a single central vent. Someone needs to make covers/scoops/screens for the later models.

      Good luck.
