Possible rack failure 900 1992

I have a 1992 944 which has a loud whine when the steering is moved from left to right and back again. I can't tell if it is coming from the pump or the rack. It is also worse when the car is at lower RPMs and rounding a turn.(E.G. Right or left turn from a stop) The steering also makes a clicking noise when the car is first started up and the steering is cycled from left to right.

Any ideas?

If it's the belt, then look at the pump pulley alignment in comparison with the harmonic balancer. The pump bracket can wear, allowing the pump to twist and cause misalignment and belt noise especially when turning. Fix is a new bracket.
