Odometer Trouble 200

I've just noticed that my odometer is no longer working. Any suggestions as to how to fix this? Also, my 240 has random trouble starting when the engine is cold. It will start and then die, but will start and run perfectly on the second try. It also has some trouble when I shift into Reverse or Drive. Could this be the IAC Valve or throttle trouble?

After ordering the gear where rstarkie pointed. Read the instructions by daveshan at:

Easy less than 1 hour job. While you are there clean the instrument panel bulbs and Temp. compensating board contacts. Do a search on "compensating board" for more info.

I'd be willing to bet the farm that its the gear in the speedo mine have been broke for years... I figure whats a few thousand miles more or less we are probably going to drive them for ever anyway, as far as stalling get ya a couple of cans of contact cleaner and a couple of cans of carb cleaner and a couple of tooth brushs, start cleaning everything, ALL the electrical conections, throttle body IAC just any where you find gunk...NOT the AMM I'm not sure but to be safe I do not spray ANYTHING in the AMM. but nearly everything else is fair game, look for bad vacumme hoses and holes in the big hose to the throttle body, there are only about a hundred things that can cause this and about 95 of them can be fixed by cleaning something, 3 of them will cost ya about $20 and 2 of them you will never find, and if it's one of those 2 you will have to drive the next 300,000 miles starting it twice every morning (like my wife), there are much worse things in life!
good luck and happy hunting

If the speedometer works and the odometer does not it is most like a broken tooth on the small gear in the speedometer. If you can remove the instrument cluster and then the speedometer you will probably be able to partially disassemble the speedometer and see the broken gear (about the size of a dime) Replacements are available from Jeff Caplan at http://www.odometergears.com/

This just happened on my 245 last week. A speedo service shop said $175 would fix it, saying the gear is $30 from VDO.
Is the gear available any cheaper? I can do it my self and save a lot of bucks.

As is posted in this thread here is the procedure for the repair.

This is the only place I know of to get the gear.
