squeaky car 200

My 1991 240 sedan after 190,000 mileshas begun to squeak a lot in the front and the back especially when I go over bumps or a rough road. Living in NYC with all the potholes from the serious winter, the car has become very noisy. What is the cause of this problem? I have been told it is not the struts/shocks,but the bushings. The front bushings have been replaced but the front of the car still squeaks. If you press down on either of the front fenders the car will squeak. Why is it so hard to find out what is causing this?

I had some squeaks and just got under there with a 17mm wrench and tightened up some of the nuts and bolts. Fixed it. You might need some bushings, though. But certainly try the easy free fix before anything else. Definitely get somebody to bounce up and down while you get under there to listen.

Check the sway bar to frame mount bushings. If they seem to be the culprit, try shooting a bit of lbe in them and see if it helps wuiet things. If so, replace them at next oportunity.

The front end of mine had started to squeak a bit when going over the speed bumps, and I suspected either control arm bushings or struts. But when I put in the turbo swaybars and the accompanying front swaybar bushings, the noise disappeared.

Erling.

Well if all it takes is to push down on the fenders, get a friend to push down while you try to localize the squeak. You may need ramps to get underneath though.
