On my '79 244 DL there is a red light between the speedometer and tachometer that says EGR/EXH. What does this mean? How do I get rid of it?

I am thinking that there is a milage recorder similar to that for the oxygen sensor reminder on cars with Lambda Sond. In which case you need to locate the recorder, somewhere close to the instrument cluster, and push the reset button. Look/feel around for a short drive cable from the speedo to the recorder. On the Lambda cars the reset button is a long skinny peg.

And check/clean/replace the EGR valve. That's what it is reminding you to do.

I looked that up and it was as I described but I forgot to mention there's a cover (1 screw) over the reset button and wire connections.
